Flying the ridges

The video below captures the fun of glider flying, in particular the sport of 'ridge-running', using only the thermals rising up from the hills to maintain altitude, plus the speed of one's passage. I apologize for the damnfool soundtrack someone added to the video. I wish people would learn to leave great video alone, and not muck it up by adding such tracks, but I guess that's too much to ask . . .

Even despite the soundtrack, that's some wonderful footage!

I agree that the music is a distraction rather than a help.

Nice bit of flying, anyway. From the back seat no less.

I'd call the music a nice change of pace from the usual heavy metal or hard rock that normally accompanies such videos. But then again, I'm looking at the video and thinking "That's a great bit of flying, and he's a lot gutsier than I'll ever be." I don't think I'd want to do that without an engine.

That it is. I'd be surprised if that terrain is anywhere near the Chattahoochee, though. :-)

I've always wanted to try soaring. It looks like a hoot.

He got a little close a few times. I think at one point I was able to read a road sign.

It kinda reminded me of parts of west Texas or around the hill country in central Texas. But, I'm in Missouri so what do I know. :-)

The great thing about not having an engine (the peace and quiet aside) is the fact that you don't have to worry about the engine going out. I don't entirely mean that in humour: The other part of it is that if you're always considering what to do if you lose your current source of lift, then you probably won't put yourself in a position where a loss of lift is going to be a problem.

Modern high-performance sailplanes can glide about 50 feet forward for each foot of altitude expended, and with that performance can gain altitude from weak sources of lift.

Definitely an odd choice on the soundtrack. I would have gone with "Dreams" by Van Halen...

Anyhoo, it looked like fun but I still wouldn't try that without an engine.

It looks like the East county area in San Diego, around Jamul, Campo.

Nice video none-the-less. Thanks for showing.

That is SOCAL... Probably inland from San Diego and yeah, he's playing with fire there...

Pretty cool flying - I'm aware that, due to the foreshortening effect of the video lens, the ground is not as close as it seems, but still...

The soundtrack is not totally unpleasant - though I think I'd have chosen something other than jug-band jumparound, myself.

I just turned the volume down some, and enjoyed the visuals.

That was very nice. I found the following link interesting - RC models, but still...
