Thugs will not doubt erect makeshift barriers and roadblocks to prey upon the travelers. History has shown this over and over. Castles and forts were designed for fortification--there was little to none in a small wagon train or an isolated wagon crossing the prairie. A fixed position well armed by trained folks can be more effective than a camper with a couple loved ones cramped in the front and back seats against a well-entrenched roadblock of desperate thugs looking to take what just rolled up to their stop.SgtPreppernoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6244999628674918029.post-42794905561602723242012-10-20T00:27:40.612-05:002012-10-20T00:27:40.612-05:00First rule of evacuating: Interstates are for chum...First rule of evacuating: Interstates are for chumps. Everyone and their meth-head neighbor will be hitting the interstate.Depending on which way the storm is coming from, my hurricane evacuation plans use Highway 90 if I'm going west and US-61 if I'm going north or east.

Second Rule of evacuating: Plan your route now & know where you're going. If possible, take a weekend and drive it to see where you might have trouble, and figure alternate routes. If you can't afford to drive it in person, drive it virtually with Google Street View. Also plan bypasses for the likely chokepoints along your route.

Third rule of evacuating: If at all possible, make your run for it in the dead of night. Less traffic, it'll be *much* cooler in your car, and if you have kids, they'll likely fall back asleep rather than ask if y'all are there yet or repeatedly singing the Barney song in the key of "off" until you're strongly considering a retroactive abortion.Cybrluditehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02222195374935367060noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6244999628674918029.post-32797596203585290922012-10-18T22:24:26.622-05:002012-10-18T22:24:26.622-05:00I wrote an article in a similar vein recently, tar...I wrote an article in a similar vein recently, targeting just the problems with survival gardening for food.
http://hub.me/adPX1Tom Bridgelandhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13098048586042365606noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6244999628674918029.post-17433394065938194062012-10-18T15:17:02.920-05:002012-10-18T15:17:02.920-05:00Paul:

Calculate that as the farthest reaches of the spread for the majority. Of course, the late starting will not get as far, due to the traffic problems.

As far as using motorhomes, try to avoid the front-wheel drive models for this use, as the lack of traction, and low chassis/ground clearance limits them to paved surfaces. Same problem with some pickups/vans, as far as ground clearance, and this also applies to the trailers themselves.
If things are really bad, being able to get your rig away from the roads so you are not visible can be a big security issue.
If you can raise your trailer (maybe with air shocks?), you have more flexibility in where you go.Willhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00722792638246578812noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6244999628674918029.post-57231843510932947032012-10-18T14:53:14.475-05:002012-10-18T14:53:14.475-05:00Peter, you did a great job of pointing out the pra...Peter, you did a great job of pointing out the practical problems of driving out of a populated area in the event of crisis. Furthermore, I believe your points undermine the notion that a great wave of looters will spread from the cities to areas hundreds of miles beyond--i.e., Rawles's soc-called "Golden Horde." It's not realistic.Paulnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6244999628674918029.post-9053181519028028562012-10-18T12:05:01.895-05:002012-10-18T12:05:01.895-05:00Well done, sir - very useful & informative. We've also have arrangements at two other widely-separated places - one in town, and one 120 miles away - depending on conditions.Rev. There are areas of the western US where a disruption to the power grid at a (relatively) distant location will cause water supply problems, even if the locations still has power.Nor potability questions, but a near total lack of any water. Eastern areas might have similar problems. Just something to keep in mind.

LittleRed1Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6244999628674918029.post-81407686849580724452012-10-18T07:05:36.289-05:002012-10-18T07:05:36.289-05:00@Raven: Thanks for the kind words.
