The world's first time machine?
It seems that scientists at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) based in Geneva, Switzerland, are preparing for a series of "atom-smashing" tests later this year. They aim to recreate conditions in the first billionth of a second after the "Big Bang". This, they hope, will shed light on the origins of the universe.
So far, so good. However, two researchers at Moscow's Steklov Mathematical Institute, Irina Arefeva and Igor Volovich, are warning that the energy produced by this experiment could "open the doorway to visitors from the future". They fear that a "wormhole", or "time tunnel" between the future and the past, might be created.
A scientist at CERN has described their theory as "nothing more than a good science fiction story", but the Russians are sticking to their guns.
Of course, being neither a nuclear physicist nor a mathematician, yours truly can't comment on the validity of their fears.
However, I shall be able to demonstrate in due course whether or not they're real.
If you see readers commenting on a post on this blog before I've posted it . . . odds are that time travel has arrived!
Peter
LOL. Are they serious? That reminds me of some episodes of Stargate SG-1 on TV, except the wormhole went through space, not time.
ReplyDeleteDear Peter,
ReplyDeleteIn response to your March 15th post on the assasination of Julius Ceaser, no, the entire plot was not masterminded by the shadowy group of a 'secret government' it was in fact a unified effort by the entire Senate.
Yours Sincerely, Brutus.
In other news, in light of recent increase in availability of imported automotive technology, researcher Irina Arefeva warned that traveling at over 60 miles per hour could cause one's facial skin to tear off.
ReplyDeleteIgor Volovich added his prediction that the detonation of the first atom bomb may ignite the atmosphere and burn the surface of the earth to a cinder.
And last year during the smashes they were conducting to test theories concerning black holes, people were seriously predicting (with the flawed math to "prove" it) that the resultant singularity would consume and destroy about 80% of the planet, give or take (though some were saying it'd wipe out as much as the whole solar system). In reality, mathematically demonstrable even before the experiment, it would take something on the order of two atoms to "fill" the black hole they were creating.
ReplyDeleteI love watching the CERN news, and the chicken little people like these Russians make up a good chunk of that enjoyment.
I don't know why, but I fear their concerns are over exaggerated.
ReplyDeleteHowever, about 3 years ago, I was privileged to operate a real time machine. I was allowed to drive a friends 1970 Mustang with the 351C and 4 speed combination. It took me back and made me feel just as stupidly invincible as I did in high school driving my 1969 Mach I.
