To assume they all would cozie up to the Democrats might not happen...Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6244999628674918029.post-29814723544850476382010-03-24T10:14:23.527-05:002010-03-24T10:14:23.527-05:00I've got to disagree with you on this one. Immigration policy has been a big topic for centuries, so discussion of immigration reform now doesn't portend anything.

Given our current government, do you really think they can pass a major, controversial bill and have it take effect before November elections? Even with the Health Care Bill, most of its provisions don't take effect until 2014!

A path to citizenship for illegal residents in this country makes good sense. In fact, the "Amnesty" in a bill that's currently being looked at requires that the applicant admit to the crime of illegally entering the country, speak English, pay fines and back taxes, and pass a background check. Even if every illegal resident in the country attempted to achieve citizenship, it would take years to process the applications and many would not be accepted. Realistically, the number of illegal residents granted citizenship in the next decade would likely be under 1 million - a drop in the bucket.

If we can get a million hard-working new citizens contributing to our economy, I really don't care how long they lived here illegally before now.

Even if immigration reform was as horrible as you make it out to be, the Republicans are perfectly capable of stalling it until the November elections.Andrew Chttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09486716058377059434noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6244999628674918029.post-91511081785225598952010-03-24T08:33:52.232-05:002010-03-24T08:33:52.232-05:00Sadly, I agree with this assessment and it's w...Sadly, I agree with this assessment and it's why I'm so pessimistic about the future. I've been talking about it on my blog since Monday.

When amnesty is passed, again against the wished of the people, that will constitute a clear breach of The Constitution in that no elections that are held after that fact can be considered to be legitimate.

This can only end in violence. Either with a citizen’s revolt now or full societal meltdown when in the very near future the bill comes due and there's no money left pay it (Doing to ourselves what we had done to the USSR... Out spent ourselves).

Either way, we've seen the end of the USA as we knew it. What comes of it now is anyone’s guess and depends on how seriously people are willing to bleed right now to set things right.

As an aside, I think people are plenty willing to fight (and I do mean with violence), but with out leadership to call them to arms, I don’t see it happening.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
