Dad rigged it together using an old car axle, 14-inch tires, and an aluminum frame, with bent pipes for the handle and two 'U's' to keep it from tipping forward. The sides and floor are plywood (about to rot out; we need to rebuild it), and the back is held on by a bungee cord, easily removable to dump stuff. It can hold up to 12 cinderblocks, five children, or a large load of compost with ease, but it needs clearance and can be a bit unwieldy when going through gates or uphill. Still, it works for us!E. Tomb brick carvings and historical records establish this exhaustively. However, later designs (post third-century, per infogalactic) incorporated a centrally mounted wheel. The article implies (unintentionally, I think) that the center-mount wheel design was always the rule in China. That's incorrect. It did come to swiftly dominate the field after its development, however.

Really interesting article, despite my quibbling about historical Chinese wheelbarrow design. Fascinating. Important to remember that China and Europe had very different resources and geography, among other complexities. It's not as simple as "Europeans weren't quick enough to think about developing the wheelbarrow instead of trying to cling to wide roads...etc" Much, much more complicated than that. Just another quibble with the phrasing.Bibliotheca Servarehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11643412827583261562noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6244999628674918029.post-17033554880179397822021-11-17T14:08:19.170-06:002021-11-17T14:08:19.170-06:00I was thinking of that too.
