On the one hand Peter has it right - the longer one's unemployment stint, the less employable he gets. On the other hand some countries try to do something about that: in Germany there are training offerings for unemployed people designed to improve their employability (usually training for occupations with higher employability chances). These training offerings are pretty intensive and hard work is an absolute requirement, so only highly motivated people make use of them. As a result these guys rarely stay unemployed. On the other hand the chronically unemployed are offered at least seasonal work, like during the asparagus harvesting. Statistics show that most long-term unemployed prefer to skip this offering since it means hard work (last year over 85% called in sick) and they get their unemployment or social security aid anyway. So where's the optimal path? Some voices state that immigrants are "hungrier" than long-term unemployed, thus more motivated to take on low-paying jobs instead of staying on social security aid. Personally I think the system is broken and needs to drastically cut through all of the social programs with a keen eye on cost-benefits...CGR710https://www.blogger.com/profile/15505866142053585054noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6244999628674918029.post-24035866725004046772015-10-28T05:18:54.042-05:002015-10-28T05:18:54.042-05:00Being unemployed (or unoccupied) drives me crazy. ...Being unemployed (or unoccupied) drives me crazy. Mohammed Ali had an IQ of 79 which used to be considered borderline mental retardation. Some stats place the average IQ even lower. I know in today's political climate that this is anathema - but truth has no respect for political correctness. It's cheaper to automate than to employ low skill/low IQ Africans.

As far as those that are educated and unemployed...the credentialism bubble has popped. Those with phony degrees in useless subjects are no longer seen as educated and useful. Some degrees are correctly seen by employers as red flags - such as many of the liberal arts and grievance studies programs. Your education does not stop when you leave school - ithat is when it usually begins.Glen Filthiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03256741311142364722noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6244999628674918029.post-89794023955030220992015-10-27T23:34:24.665-05:002015-10-27T23:34:24.665-05:00The only upside if you could call it that to this...The only upside if you could call it that to this is that unemployed natives are fairly easy to weaponize against foreigners and tranzis A.B. Unrestricted immigration into both Europe and America comprised mainly of unskilled foreigners who don't speak or read/write the language or understand the predominant cultures will bring this problem to a head in those areas as well when they either cannot work or displace those already working the low-skill jobs.Murphy's Lawhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17164780742334950772noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6244999628674918029.post-15346857513132798772015-10-27T17:45:45.917-05:002015-10-27T17:45:45.917-05:00More justification for the powers that be to bump ...More justification for the powers that be to bump off 25% of the population.Gorges Smythehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08777621500611603786noreply@blogger.com
