Banks print money electronically every day. Get an electronic dollar from the Fed and turn around and lend out 95 (or whatever the current ratio is). Bottom line most of our money is electronic and debt based. Where people are using debt instruments as collateral, so for instance a mortgage, what happens when real estate prices collapse. If people were smart they would write the value off and allow some of the electronic money to go away and the market to right itself. Since we got here by being greedy & stupid, we will print more money and do government bailouts which will accelerate inflation further.

Start thinking gardening and long term. In 1920s the pound sterling was gradually handing that status over to the dollar.

That meant that the 1920s german hyperinflation was limited to a relatively small part of the global economy and the rest of the world, particularly outside Europe, could fundamentally ignore it and go their merry way regardless.

100 years later and that's not the case. The US econbomy is ~25% of the global economy and all sorts of global markets are priced in dollars. Plus of course many international entities use NY as a source of financing, much of which is in dollars. Not to mention that the US economy is the world's largest.

Unless the US authorities find a way to unprint most of the dollars they have printed in the last year (and they may do, I don't understand where it has gone but it is quite likely in places that are easy to get to) we're going to see what happens when a quarter of the global economy suffers hyperinflation.
