I'm dumbfounded by a report from Romania.
It's a medical mystery that surgeons never got to the bottom of in a hospital casualty room - how a woman patient ended up with a can of hairspray up her backside.
Mirela Gradinaru, 37, turned up at the clinic in Arad, western Romania, in agony begging doctors to help her.
But she refused to say just how the can came to be there even after a successful, delicate operation to remove the aerosol.
Doctor Mirandolina Prisca explained: "We had X-rays done to localise the object and then we carried out the operation. The patient was fine after it."
"She was very embarrassed. She was clearly in a lot of pain, however it got there.
"This was not just a little can of deodorant, this was a massive can of hairspray," said one hospital worker.
I was tempted to award the lady one of our Doofus Of The Day titles, but she may not have been the person responsible for inserting the can, so that might not have been fair.
When I told a friend about this, an EMT in a local fire department, he doubled over with laughter. I accused him of lacking sympathy: whereupon he nodded his head in unabashed agreement, and wondered whether, if she'd sat down at precisely the right angle, she might have been able to eject hairspray instead of the normal flatulence!
I regret to admit I couldn't help joining in his laughter at the thought . . .

Peter,
ReplyDeleteIf you talk to anyone that has done a lot of time working in EMS or in EDs you will find a surprising number of people that do this sort of thing. In my time, I saw many items used to include someone who had used a 150 watt light bulb which had to be covered in plaster of Paris to be removed safely. The last case I saw involved a small spray can of foot deodorant. When the can of deodorant was removed, the doctor who got it out observed "No wonder there was a problem, it says plainly on the can for external use only"
Well, it made ME laugh.
To qoute the 2007 movie, "Imagine! My little girl...regular, at last."

One summer in college, I drove an ambulance for the University Health Service. About every other week, we'd have to make a run down to Sorority Row for something. Once, it was about a 16oz Coke bottle that a coed had "accidentally" sat upon.
