A harness-wire pilot, known locally as "the good fairy," impacted the ground and sustained minor injuries. Witnesses at the departure site reported that the pilot made no pre-flight inspection. Just before the incident, the many witnesses reported that the pilot was flying "very low" and "moving very slowly" while "waving a wand at some children and speaking in a saccharine voice." The pilot then made an abrupt departure from horizontal flight, pitching downward suddenly and descending out of view. An examination at the crash site showed that the harness was a design not approved for flight, having no safety mechanism to ensure that its attachment points to the wires remained latched during flight. One attachment point was found fully unlatched. The other was found partially latched, with damage consistent with it having been pulled suddenly off of the wire.
Probable cause: The harness became unlatched from the wires, either because the attachment latches became unlatched, or were not fully latched before flight. Contributing cause: Failure of the pilot to adequately preflight the vehicle. The pilot's use of a substandard harness not approved for flight.
Having done community theater for a few years, I saw the fall coming. It's amazing how many accidents live theater can withstand and still keep the show going. Chances are good that if she wasn't seriously injured, the good fairy stood up and said "Well, I guess my wand ran out of fairydust."
What I didn't see coming was Wayne Conrad's post accident report. I'm glad I wasn't drinking anything, that was better than the original funny.
