How to launch an anvil into the wild blue yonder
"Why would you want to do that?" some readers will ask.
This is an old Blacksmith's way to celebrate Independence Day, New Years Day or the opening of a new keg day... There are an awful lot of Anvil Shooters out there and events are held on at least four continents. They don't get the publicity of the Olympics but they sure have fun anyway. What the video doesn't give you is the "Thump" your feet feel or the compression wave washing over you. You feel this event.
I used to get woke up Fourth of July morning by the explosive launch of an anvil by a neighbor that lived two miles away over the hills and hollers. Woo Hoo ! Thanks for the video; I've never seen it done (the neighbor passed on some years ago). I'll be watching for a launch!acickleo
The fellow in the clip is not far from where I grew up.
My Dad (born 1917) remembered fondly the Annual Picnic with anvil shooting and other antics.
We used to shoot the aluminum 35mm film cans with carbide when I was a kid. Almost afraid to teach my son (16 yo) for fear the Authoritah will find fault.
hold on a sec: "world champion"?
ReplyDeleteSomehow, I don't think he has much competition!

Heh, heh! "Come down near where it goes up..."
ReplyDeleteI'd want a little more distance, myself.
