Today's winner comes from Washington DC. A tip o' the hat to reader P. M. H. who e-mailed me with a link to the story.
A Southeast Washington man who accidentally shot himself during a rape attempt has been sentenced to 12 years in prison, U.S. Attorney Ronald C. Machen Jr. said Monday in a statement.
Prosecutors said Jonathan Newman, 23, snuck up behind a woman who was talking on a mobile phone outside her Shaw neighborhood apartment building on a late night in June, 2009. He pointed a revolver to her temple and forced her inside, authorities said.
As Newton struggled to restrain the woman, he shot himself in the arm and fled, prosecutors said.
Newton was convicted on rape, robbery and gun charges.
A wannabe rapist who shoots himself? Let's hear it for Mr. Newton - and may many others follow his example!

12 years in prison? Why not give him some better instruction on how to effectively shoot himself instead?

He shot himself in the wrong extremity. The short leg would have provided a much better result.

The criminal shot himself. It is a tragedy that the victim was not allowed to do so.
ReplyDeleteSuch is life in D.C., where victim disarmament is still the order of the day.
