The muckier side of the Olympics?

The seventh annual Mud Olympics was staged in Germany last weekend, at the Brunsbüttel dike on the mudflats of the River Elbe estuary, where it flows into the North Sea near Hamburg.

The event's Web site (which is in German - here's an English translation) lists events such as mud soccer, mud handball, and something called Wolli Ball, allegedly shown below. It looks like a cross between soccer, rugby and all-in wrestling!

The 'eel relay race' sounds like something I'd rather avoid!

Competitors enjoyed a communal 'de-mudding' after their events.

There are lots more photographs at the link. I've not been able to find a video clip of this year's championship, but here's one showing last year's soccer and handball events.
