Remember Rachel Corrie, the American 'peace activist' who was killed when she sat down in front of an Israeli bulldozer in the Gaza Strip? She's become an icon, to the Left for her opposition to Israel, to the Right as an example of everything that's wrong with the Loony Left!
It seems she's to be commemorated in yet another country.
Tehran's municipal council has named a street after an American activist who was crushed to death by an Israeli military bulldozer in the Gaza Strip in 2003.
A report in today's edition of Hamshahri, a daily affiliated with the municipality, says the council in the Iranian capital decided to name the street Rachel Aliene Corrie.
. . .
The decision marks the first time since the 1979 Islamic Revolution that an Iranian street has been named after a US national.
There's more at the link.
I suppose this is proof positive that the Iranian government is in-Corrie-gible . . .

P.S.: Some may regard my finding humor in this situation as being cold-hearted or callous. I don't think so. I'm a realist. (Spending multiple years in situations of prolonged conflict tends to make one that way.) I understand that, if you choose to stand in front of a heavily armored bulldozer whose driver has an extremely limited field of vision, the odds of you getting squashed like a bug are better than even. Rachel Corrie proved that. She died as the result of her own decisions. I'm sorry she's dead, but I'm damned if I'm going to cry over her own fatally wrong choices.

ReplyDeleteAgreed, except I'm not a bit sorry she's dead. I cry for the American troops who die defending their country, but I shed no tears for a naive brat.
I'm with you, Peter. Miss Corrie was a useful idiot to the strange combination of leftists and Islamists that inflame the situation in Gaze.
ReplyDeleteI feel bad when I see any idiot die, but Heinlein once said, "Stupidity is the only universal capital crime; the sentence is death. There is no appeal, and execution is carried out automatically and without pity."
As I see it, she committed suicide.
ReplyDeleteLet's nominate her for a Darwin award!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThe Darwin Awards honor Charles Darwin who observed that each generation descends from those who survive. We commemorate those who give natural selection a hand by removing themselves from the gene pool. Our heroes sacrifice their very lives, thereby self-evidently improving survival chances of the children of the future. After all, evolution is for the children, is it not?

Agree, just another form of suicide.
ReplyDeleteNo tears here.
Hope the road is symbolically flat and level.
Ok, let's hear it for the self-inflicted idiocy. BUT did you see the video yesterday of the Verizon union father who had his daughter stand in front of a Verizon repair truck while he berated the 'scab' labor?!!! See if you can find it. This man also felt very strongly about his 'problem', to the point where he involved his under-ten daughter and put her at severe risk. I don't dare if he were to be run-over, but I draw the line at using your children to make a statement.
ReplyDeleteI hear they're going to put a pancake house on that street...

In response to this event, the US Government should have issued a statement strongly suggesting that, in order to prevent recurrences of this incident, all US citizens stay away from the business end of bulldozers.
