Following my post earlier this morning about a Dutch chef who cooked a four-course meal for members of that country's armed forces serving in Afghanistan, I received two e-mails offering more useful ideas for food that's way out there - and how to eat it when you're "way out there"!
From Hans K. in Germany comes this news:
A German snack bar is bucking the economic crisis with a posh twist on a favourite local dish: a veal filet coated with gold leaf and truffles that has been dubbed the world's priciest schnitzel.
The “Golden Kaiser Schnitzel” is on offer at a self-service counter in Düsseldorf, western Germany for a cool €150 [about US $197].
Swathed in 24-carat gold, it outshines the sausage and meatball dishes on the menu, which start at under €5 [about US $6.60].
Surprisingly it is not the Midas touch that makes the dish so pricey, but the white Italian Alba truffles in the breading, sold for up to €5,000 [about US $6,570] per kilo, in addition to the black truffles on top, shop manager Thomas Huber told AFP.
While just milligrammes of gold leaf are needed, the recipe requires a few grammes of truffles.
"Gold has no taste," Huber said, but it does give the dish an attractive glimmer.

Next, from reader Alicia S., we learn of a pair of trousers that offers a built-in table . . . sort of!
Pic nic pants take advantage of the usual cross-legged position to become a comfortable surface useful for consumption of a meal outdoors. Laterally pants have an orientable pocket for drinks.

There you go, then: a 'rich' meal to eat outdoors and the right clothes for the occasion - complete with cupholder! However, the latter might not work in the military context of my initial article (see below). I can see my former Sergeant-Major having an attack of apoplexy at the thought of his soldiers walking around in a semi-detached kilt!
