The Telegraph has published a wonderful photographic gallery of dolphins and birds attacking a bait ball of mackerel near the Azores in the Atlantic Ocean. Here are three images to whet your appetite, reduced in size to fit this blog.

ReplyDeleteI've been luck enough to see this from a boat above the action, but not in the water. The predators in this case have been blackfin tuna and sailfish, but everyone "knows" there are lots of sharks below that.
ReplyDeleteIt's an awesome sight to see an acre of clear blue ocean turning black with the bodies of the bait, and then see the bills of the sailfish slashing through. The tuna swim into the ball from below, but while tuna are very fast, they aren't able to change direction rapidly, so they fly into the air, mackerel (or whatever) in their jaws.
