Stress tests for trains?

This video clip provides very little information as to its purpose, and its title's in Russian, so I'm not sure precisely what's going on.  I think it's a series of tests of what happens when a train impacts vehicles and loads of various kinds, to see how they react and what sort of penetration of the train/engine takes place.  The music is ghastly, but the images are certainly interesting.  I suggest watching it in full-screen mode, with the sound turned off.

Some pretty impressive impacts there . . .

  1. I think I've seen this video before, or at least a version without the brain-hemhorage-inducing music.

IIRC, it's crash-test footage shot by EMD in the 1970s while they were developing the then-new "Safety Cab" locomotive design.

  3. At about 5:20, the cab has the D.O.T. logo on the side (Dept. of Transportation). Interesting...

  6. There's an amazing video up on youtube of a train being hit by a tornado. The view is out of the back of the locomotive - some of the closer cars get blown over, the loco stops, and the the rest of the train just keeps coming - and coming. The moving mass of a train is pretty incredible.

  7. The music is frikken hilarious. It reminds me of the soundtrack of '70s tv shows.

  8. Yep, it's a DOT test. I remember seeing something like this years ago dealing with engine safety...
