I've never seen one like that before . . .


From NASA's Astronomy Picture Of The Day, here's an image of a cap cloud over the Sierra Nevada mountains of Spain.  I've reduced the image size to fit this blog.

  1. In meteorological terms, it's a lenticular cloud. I've seen much smaller versions above growing thunderstorms.

  2. Yes, lenticular clouds, from the word for "lentil" in Latin, "lens." (also where the word for "lens" comes from when talking optics). We see them a lot over Mt Rainer in WA state.
