Courtesy of Australian reader Snoggeramus, we learn of a student who has a unique approach to funding her studies.
A UNIVERSITY fresher who blew her entire student loan on partying has launched an online campaign asking for donations to clear her overdraft.
The Sun reports Emma McCormick spent the cash on alcohol, clubbing and trips to other cities — running up a grand of extra debt.
The 18-year-old has only managed to raise £20 [about US $29] so far but she remains hopeful that people will “help a student out”.
. . .
Despite her partying habits, Ms McCormick adamantly stresses that not all her loan went on herself.
A student can typically borrow £1,500 [just under US $2,200] in the first year of their studies and Ms McCormick said most of the money went on visiting friends in other UK cities.
. . .
The cheeky undergrad said she wanted to go travelling so thought she might as well eradicate her overdraft.
“I really want to do South America,” she said.
“Lots of people have done Thailand in their gap year.
“And I kind of want to take a year out after my degree and see as much of the world as possible.”

I'm left shaking my head at the sheer chutzpah of expecting total strangers to not only make up the wasted money of her past spendthrift ways, but in doing so to help fund her future travels. I can only imagine that she really does believe money grows on trees!

A member over at Absolute Write claimed a friend of her teen daughter was trying to get her speeding ticket paid for via GoFundMe.
ReplyDeleteAnd before those sites existed, there were several stories about people crowdfunding breast implants.
As I said in my comment on the original Daily Mail story, I hope this story follows this stupid girl around for a very long time. She's put up clear warning signs regarding her character and work ethic, let's hope employers do a bit of "due diligence" when processing applications.....
ReplyDeleteIt's not my fault. They gave me the money!
ReplyDeleteThat one falls in the YGTBSM category... Sigh
ReplyDeleteThis reminds me of a Facebook post:
ReplyDeleteFailure to plan on your part
does not constitute an emergency on my part.
Simply amazing!
ReplyDeleteAt least she isn't claiming that blowing the money was her right and demanding to be repaid. I'll give her points for chutzpah.

Not sure if stupidity or genius... Depends on if it works I guess.
ReplyDeleteThe New Age beggar, entitled and clueless, a product of the drive for a symptom free existence. When actions don't have consequences fantasy becomes the new norm.
ReplyDeleteI'd be happy to help with your education. First lesson: Actions have consequences. You enjoyed your money, you suffer the consequences.
ReplyDeleteMaybe you should ask for "donations" from the guys you went clubbing with, because they enjoyed your actions, too, and might want to contribute to your continuation in that lifestyle. Of course, that's an old occupation that has a well-known name.
And if one goes through proper channels to obtain needed public assistance they put you "through the grind", even when eligible for said assistance.
ReplyDeleteHow can this young lady see herself as being "deserving"?
