With Hurricane Irma making landfall in Florida today, what better moment to listen to songs about storms, rain and the like? There's an immense selection out there, so I picked just a few of the ones I knew. Please feel free to link to online versions of others in the Comments section.
Let's begin with two from Led Zeppelin. Since Irma is likely to cut power to almost everyone in Florida, I thought it would be appropriate to use an "unplugged" (i.e. acoustic instrument only) version of "The Rain Song".
Next, Led Zeppelin's classic hard rock "When the Levee Breaks" (which was certainly appropriate during Hurricane Katrina in 2005!). In this case, I broke with tradition and went with the all-female Zepparella version.
Creedence Clearwater Revival doubtless speaks for most Floridians as it asks, "Who'll Stop the Rain?"
Newfoundland group Figgy Duff advise us to "Weather Out the Storm".
And finally, one of my favorite songs from Blackmore's Night, "The Storm", with some superb acoustic guitar work from Ritchie Blackmore.
Stay dry, Florida friends!

Boarded up, tied down, and hunkering down. Fortified with plenty of extra water, canned food, snacks, flashlights, plenty of ammo, generator gas and a chainsaw handy. East central Fla is secure. Rock-n-roll Irma.....
ReplyDeleteAll good ones! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteYou forgot BAD MOON RISING.
ReplyDeletePeter, you forgot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3IxDrTtqYY
ReplyDeleteREO Speedwagon, Ridin' the Storm out. Have done it many a time in the Midwest.
ReplyDeleteThe Scorpions "Rock me like a Hurricane."

Folk singer Mary Gauthier, a Louisiana native, released the song It Ain't the Wind, It's the Rain in February of 2005. Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans later than August. That's the late Faces organist Ian MacLagan on the Hammond B3.
ReplyDeleteNeil Young, Like a Hurricane.
ReplyDeleteNext weekend, when the turmoil dies out, can I suggest "Trying to Reason with the Hurrican Season?" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xg-zwba7l5w
ReplyDeleteAnd now I must confess,
I could use some rest.
I can't run at this pace very long.
Yes, it's quite insane,
I think it hurts my brain.
But it cleans me out and then I can go on.
Considering the intensity of the storm, I'd suggest a more intense version of the Neil Young. Perhaps https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmKrcOB7udA
ReplyDeleteAnd perhaps The Doors' "Riders On The Storm" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1BTBd6mdhs
And I realize this is late, but I really don't know how I forgot Jackson Browne's "Before The Deluge"
