What if Dr. Seuss had drawn Lovecraft's "The Call of Cthulhu"?

I had to laugh when I learned, courtesy of an article at Gizmodo, that the idea was not far-fetched.  In fact, an artist at DeviantArt, DrFaustusAU, has drawn the book in Dr. Seuss's inimitable style, complete with rhyming verses!

Here's the cover and a sample of an interior double-page spread.  Click each image for a larger view.

There are many more drawings in the article, and also at the project's Web page.  Enjoy!

  1. I've got this, and read it, and it's remarkable how well it was translated into Seuss rhymes!

  2. Totally off topic, but you've likely never heard the story of the dead whale that washed up on the beach at Florence, Oregon, 50 years ago, and it's "disposal".

FLORENCE, Ore. - Fifty years ago Monday, a whale washed up on Heceta Beach.

Three days later on November 12, 1970, that dead whale exploded into history with what has been described as the first-ever viral news story.

"It had to be said the Oregon State Highway Department not only had a whale of a problem on its hands," Paul Linnman reported for KATU a half century ago. "It had a stinking whale of a problem". "So dynamite it was, some 20 cases or a half ton of it," he said. "The hope was that the long-dead pacific gray whale would be almost disintegrated by the blast."

It didn't quite work as planned; blubber flew everywhere, flattening one person's new car and covering bystanders a quarter of a mile away in what can only be described as a layer of stinking goo.

The plan was to obliterate the whale into tiny pieces that seagulls would eat.

But as Linnman and former KATU Photojournalist Doug Brazil found out, the pieces were not exactly bite-sized.

The two had to run to escape the flying blubber.

"It came down as this oil rain on your jacket," Brazil said in 2010. "It was horrible and the smell - it was just sickening."

"If I think about it, I can still smell that smell," said Linnman.

The smell was only part of it.

Reporter Paul Linnman and photographer Doug Brazil visited the Oregon Coast on November 12, 1970. "It had to be said the Oregon State Highway Department not only had a whale of a problem on its hands," Linnman reported. "It had a stinking whale of a problem." Ah, I remember it well. It's something that stays with you. Hard to believe it was 50 years ago....

  3. @Sam L.: Yes, I'd heard of that. I've even put the video of the incident on this blog, a few years ago.

  6. Someone redid the Beach Boys "Kokomo" as a Cthulhu sign - can't find it anywhere, though.

  8. Mr. Geisel made it look easy, but the felicity of his rhymes are clearly anything but to accomplish.
