It looks like much of the country will be blanketed in snow and ice and freezing cold this weekend and into next week. We'll be enjoying (!?!) single-digit temperatures tonight, dropping below zero on Monday morning. We won't get back to above-freezing temperatures until next weekend, if the forecast is correct. To add to our enjoyment (!?!), we're forecast to get 5" to 10" of snow over the next few days. That may not sound like a lot to those of you from more northern climes, but to us in Texas, where snow is usually a light dusting once or twice every year that disappears within hours, it's a major occurrence. Travel is going to be a nightmare, because nobody has the equipment to deal with large quantities of snow on the roads, and drivers aren't used to such conditions. It's not going to be fun.
That being the case, Miss D. and I are going to batten down the hatches and stay comfortably at home. Yesterday evening I made "comfort food" (tomato soup and toasted cheese sandwiches), which was, indeed, comforting. Today I'm going to make a big pot of rich, hearty beef soup, with lots of baby potatoes, carrots, onions, celery, cabbage and tomatoes. It'll warm us up from the inside out. We have lots of firewood, plenty of blankets, and two cats eager to share all of them with us (whether we want that or not). We should be fine.
To amuse you over this winter-storm-plagued weekend, here's a selection of what Halidon Music calls "Classical Music for Winter". Looking through the pieces, there's not much that I can identify as specifically seasonal, but it's pleasant listening nevertheless. You'll find the listing at the video's page on YouTube.
Enjoy the music, and stay warm and dry!
Peter
Where's that global warming when we need it?
ReplyDeleteNow is the time we put on the Jimmy Buffett tape in the 83 4WD Blazer "Rustmonster."
ReplyDeleteThose choices sound like just the right dinners for a cold day. Two of our favorites!
ReplyDeleteEven Houston is expected to get up to 3 inches of snow with freezing rain tonight. We are likewise battened down, I expect ugliness at least on the highways, hopefully not from burst pipes.
Also sounds like you are recovering from the bug. Stay warm!
Cincinnati has 6 inches of snow on the ground now, admnd 6 to 10 inches predicted. This will lead to total gridlock. Local govts lack sufficient snow removal gear, and people have zero driving sense. Large sections of the area are very hillyascwell. Snowmageddon!
ReplyDeleteI think Vivaldi did a masterful job with The Four Seasons, and here they play his "Winter" -- perfect. Some of the other tunes are evocative of Christmas , of course, and in most climates that means real winter.
ReplyDeleteNice choice for this winter's day.
Made a big pot of Lamb Tajine last night which will be tonight's dinner (as well as at least two, maybe three more. The joys of being single, you get to become tired of almost anything you make before it is gone. I still have soup in the fridge that I made a week ago but after four bowls of it and six more in the freezer, I just don't want anymore).
ReplyDeleteGrilled cheese and tomato soup. Favorite comfort food. Eaten properly, you dip the sandwich into the soup.
I'll have to go dig through the record collection. I think there's some Vivaldi down there but I don't listen to my "classical" collection much. Might be a good time to.
My Sunday music is the snow sliding off the roof. 2"-2.5" snow Friday, warmed up Sat., and staying so.
