This morning's selection is definitely an acquired taste, spanning the gap between classical orchestral music and the wildest of electric guitar rock and heavy metal.
Swedish guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen is well-known for his quirky, highly original musical style. He's composed many quasi-classical pieces for the electric guitar, playing in a heavy metal style that's been out of fashion for some time except to aficionados of that genre. He's inspired a dedicated fan following, and has worked with some of the great names in rock and heavy metal. He's also attracted interest from the classical music world through his compositions and adaptations of pieces from that genre. As a brief example of the latter, here's his interpretation of Johann Sebastian Bach's well-known Fugue in G minor, BWV 578, titled "Fuguetta", from his 2005 album "Unleash The Fury".
This morning's main selection is his Concerto Suite for Electric Guitar and Orchestra in E Flat Minor, Op.1. This is a live performance with the New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra.
An interesting blend of the classical and modern; not to everyone's taste, but showcasing a major talent on the electric guitar.

Thank you for the music. As a lover of both rock and classical, these have been quite enjoyable.
ReplyDeleteYou might be interested in some of Jon Lord's compositions in a similar vein. On several of them, Ritchie Blackmore plays guitar while accompanied by the orchestra. I didn't discover Jon Lord's classical side until around the time of his death. I'm glad that I finally did.
