Friends have been sending me these images for a few days now. They're obviously circulating on social media. So, for your Christmas pleasure:

I didn't grow up with the Grinch: it's a very American Christmas story, not widely known in much of the rest of the world. I'm still not sure I like it, because it's yet another secularization of a very meaningful religious celebration. Oh, well... I mustn't be grinchy about it!

We were supposed to have Christmas at my brother's house, but he tested positive a few days ago. I'm pretty much the only pureblood in the family.

Sudden Grinch Death Syndrome
ReplyDeleteIt's true that it's a secular story, but the ending does hint at a spiritual meaning of the holiday: even when the Grinch takes all their presents, the Whos of Whoville still celebrate, and that's when the Grinch has a change of heart: "Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store! Christmas, he thought, is a little bit more."
ReplyDeleteThe moral being that Christmas is a celebration of love. Christmas is in our hearts, and can't be taken away. Not even by the government.
ReplyDeleteAt least it's a secularization with a message about giving, community, and personal growth rather than commercialization. The Whos in Whoville were perfectly happy without presents.
