Doofus Of The Day #1,098

On Twitter, a video is circulating showing a Russian wrapping himself in what appears to be a cheap bulletproof vest (origin/source unknown), then inviting a friend to shoot him in the rear end to prove it works.  Short answer - it doesn't.

You'll find the video clip here.  There's a lot of swearing in Russian, and plenty of blood dribbling onto the floor, but no permanent damage that I could see - apart from the shootee's pride, that is!

Alcohol may have been a factor.  YMMV.

  1. There was a video in the field of troopies taking the standard-issue Russian helmets, and *punching* them. Helmets inverted the bowl-shape and were cracking, but the fella was nice and punched them back into proper shape, mostly.

Not sure if it was the same video where they were taking soft armor (almost looked to be proof-against-fragments-only padded cloth) and putting some 5.45mm vent holes in it.

Haven't watch the video you refer to yet, but it does remind me of some show-off "test" the president of Second Chance participated in for a magazine article. 9mm pistol? Sure, fire, stopped it maybe halfway through. 9mm SMG (looked like an S&W M-76, IIRC) single shot? Oh, still stopped it... in the last layer of kevlar.

"Participated" as in "stood there getting shot at point-blank range so they could take pictures." :V Fella was a bit surprised... I suspect it was a combo of the lnger barrel and actual (hotter) SMG ammo. (Want to say it was an early '80s issue of S.W.A.T. magazine.)

  3. Wrapped around the wrong body part. Should have been the empty head.

Apparently, 9mm ball ammo is the most penetrative round in common use. IIRC, what is termed subgun ammo is actually what the original Luger 9mm was designed to use. Hot stuff! The Luger is somewhat iffy when using lesser pressure ammo. It won't shoot to POA with the typical usa shelf stock.

Being shot while wearing one of his vests was how Rich marketed them. Usually he shot himself, typically with a .44 mag. If selling to a PD, he would normally use one of their duty guns and issued ammo. Somewhere on the web is a video of him doing this while giving a talk to a Police Chiefs convention. THAT woke them right up!

I've seen him do this in person with that .44, and it is a memorable display. He stuffs a decent thickness phone book under the vest to spread the impact force, so he doesn't damage any ribs. He would use the same vest for multiple shows sometimes, and he would have to hunt for a clear spot to use in this case. Hmm, not sure there are any reasonably thick phone books around anymore... Saw him do this at an SOF Convention/Three Gun Match back in the 90's. He sold the business back in the early 00's.

  5. I'm more curious about that pump-action rifle. Is it a tricked-out .22 gallery gun, or is it a design to work around local gun laws?
