  1. Still my favorite part of Monday mornings... after my coffee, of course. Thank you, Peter!

  2. No. 8 - The kid being slapped: I went to Catholic School and the Nuns hit me exactly one time in the First Grade and I was able to grasp the entire concept of behavior expectations. They never had to touch me again. I promise you it was like a light bulb went on in my head. To this day I give credit to The Presentation Sisters for every time I have ever made a good decision.

  3. Saw an eighth-grader let fly with an expletive within earshot of Sister Mary Margaret. She wound up from left field and slapped his face. Kid was her nephew. Left an IMPRESSION on both of us.

  4. Regarding "What Brits Say," does anyone else hear the Brit part in Jeremy Clarkson's voice?

  5. The slap:

Elementary school whacked in the head with the nuns' big knot/blob at the end of their cincture. Sister Carmelita did it to someone almost daily.

High school, the algebra instructor, Brother Romuald, squeezed my fingertips together and whacked them with a ruler.

I was but one of many. Maybe Catholic religious education had a tendency toward violence?

  6. For "What Brits Say", Henning Wehn, a German-born comedian who performs in English, did a BBC radio show on English as a lingua Franca (ELF), and goes into a number of these examples causing issues between Brits and Germans trying to do business together.

Actually, no: I hear it in my own voice.

  8. "What Brits Say," also applies to the Japanese only more so

Any number of foreigners have misunderstood that when a Japanese person says something like Yes or Understood that doesn't mean he's going to do it/agree with it, just that he understood what you were saying
