Tradecraft - NOT!!!

Found on MeWe (sorry, can't provide a direct link - their software doesn't allow it).  Clickit to biggit.

Given the several former Intel weenies whom I know read this blog regularly, I expect feedback from them as to whether such tactics were, indeed, used in the Cold War.  It would explain a few things!

  1. If you’re single and willing to answer a lot of questions, probably not fatal. Not that the aftermath won’t be painful, but you will survive. “Why didn’t you call us sooner?” Will be the easiest one to answer.

On the plus side, you’ll have a story that will reign supreme for a long time.

If you’re a Marine guard at the Moscow embassy, this is your clue that you shouldn’t be drinking out on the Novi Arbat anyway.

If you’re married, you’re boned in more ways than one.

  3. I spent a lot of time in foreign bars hoping she'd show up. Never did.

But yes, have your fun but say little, see the intel weenies in the morning and hope they decide to dangle you as bait.

  4. Eh, outside the early part of the cold war, it's my understanding the KGB, et al. were with the program enough to avoid the "obvious foreign accent" bit with their marks unless it was known that said mark had a thing for a specific accent.

  5. You might get your clearance once you marry her and she becomes a US Citizen. At least that's been my experience.

  8. Booty-Judge was only a Mayor when he got a Chinese spy assigned to him. I can't imagine what they thought they'd get from that.

  10. Funny timing, as a recent Special Forces unit OPSEC/Intel briefing included a slide which basically said "None of you are hot enough to attract someone who looks like this, so if they're talking to you it's a honeypot."
