Given the several former Intel weenies whom I know read this blog regularly, I expect feedback from them as to whether such tactics were, indeed, used in the Cold War. It would explain a few things!

Eh, outside the early part of the cold war, it's my understanding the KGB, et al. were with the program enough to avoid the "obvious foreign accent" bit with their marks unless it was known that said mark had a thing for a specific accent.

Funny timing, as a recent Special Forces unit OPSEC/Intel briefing included a slide which basically said "None of you are hot enough to attract someone who looks like this, so if they're talking to you it's a honeypot."
