In my younger days (much younger...) I can recall competing with my squad mates to see which of us could come up with the most revolting combination of pizza toppings. Needless to say, we never actually ordered them, but it had its lighter moments. Limburger and pufferfish, anyone?

I made pizzas at a Dominoes one summer back in the 80's and I saw some weird pizzas.
ReplyDeleteRecalls a deep-dish peanut butter and jelly pizza over 50 years ago. My roommates thought I was nuts (I wasn't going to dispute that), but it tasted good. Fun to make it, too.
ReplyDeleteBack in the 80's we learned putting blu cheese on a pizza is not good in a submarine. as in periscope depth and ventilate.
ReplyDeleteThose are disgusting! But if you are adventurous and have a goodly amount of very cold beer, anchovies and jalapeno peppers is awfully good.
ReplyDeleteStill not as bad as pineapple... :-)
ReplyDeleteI make an addition to MY limburger sandwich - a slice of salt-cured country ham along with the cheese and sliced onion.

ReplyDeleteOn dark rye with a pickle, yes? Monroe, WI is the place to be for limburger.
When I began using my GI Bill for school at 30, I worked at Domino's (flexible schedule). People order some odd things. Some of the pizzas made for the crew were works of art.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't eat pepperoni pizzas for some time after that. It being the most popular pizza topping, I got so burned out on it that I wouldn't even eat the free ones (there are always mistakes/undeliverables on a rack, & we ate them avidly).

Back in college, our "why can't we get a pizza with ..." was venison, corn, and beets.
ReplyDeleteI used to attend (and, occasionally, host) "roll-your-own" pizza parties, where the host would provide dough balls and mozzarella, and the guests would show up with whatever sauces and toppings they cared for. Pizzas sometimes got pretty random.
ReplyDeleteAt one party, the host and I were somewhat frustrated at ur inability to obtain slices before they disappeared, so we decided to make a pizza that we figured nobody else would want. Our toppings of choice: anchovies and habaneros.
It didn't work out the way we expected - even that one disappeared almost too quickly for us to get any.
