To start using Linux, choose one path. Either have a use case that is simple web browsing and office tools like Libre office, or be prepared to be abused, neglected, and derided every time you seek support from the community.
I speak from experience, and I hold two computer science degrees and training as a commercial operating system expert.
When picking a version of Linux to use you have to navigate a political minefield. I used to recommend OpenSuse as free, open and one of the easiest (100 year old mom uses it) to get started with and use. No more.
If you want a Linux that has a similar look and feel to windows, I recommend that you use one with KDE, I personally use kubuntu (Ubuntu with KDE)
There are others that have more of a mac feel to them, and others that are experimenting with doing their own thing.
If almost all you do is browsing, documents, programming, Linux should be an easy transition. If you want to do gaming or have specific apps that you rely on, things can be more complicated, it depends on the app.
@stan_qaz like any other tech space, there are a lot of folks in the linux world who think they know it all, not just the technical stuff, but also what you think and why.
I just recognize that they are clueless about politics and accept the work that they are willing to provide for free (I am pickly on who I give money to)
I've been using Linux since '95 and been making my living on it since '97
I am an IT person but mostly dont want to have to mess with stuff and hust want my desktop to work. For the most part ubuntu has been doing that fir me for the last 20 years. Other than installing the non open sourse codecs and drivers for media consumption installing and then using it is easier than doing the same thing with windows 11. It comes pre packaged with browsers, office suite, photo viewers, media players etc. I tend to install a few things such as gimp, pdfscan, veracrypt, calibre library, evolution email/groupware suite, google chrome(comes with firefox). Off hand though i know there is other stuff thats all im thinking of right now.
I'm happy to ignore all the political foolishness BUT they are not willing to ignore my beliefs and just get on with things. If you read the article attached to my earlier post you see folks with the "wrong" thinking being actively banned from participation in many of the various communities.
here is a snip: Atilla Pinter (openSUSE Board Member), chimed in with the following: "the rainbow logo proved to be a great way of filtering out toxic individuals with a non-inclusive, disrespectful behavior early on, this is not a secret" "And here's another misunderstanding, we will absolutely __NOT__ tolerate you."
The wife has an older laptop that had a Windows OS that was no longer supported by Microsoft. It now has a flavor of Linux Ubuntu called Zorin. It has a desktop interface that feels like Windows 8. It runs Office 7 without any issues. There was no learning curve. There are bi-weekly software updates. It runs faster than Win 8.

I've been using Linux almost exclusively for years; it's a lot easier to work with than Windows. We're well past Red Hat 5.0.
It wasn't that long ago that Linus Torvalds commented on Linux not being as user friendly as it should be.

Even then it was very particular about who it considered friends.

Many other distributions are as bad.
Step 1 -- find a friend who already uses Linux.
(Seriously, I could tell you.....and I'd still be telling you next week....)
