Doofus Of The Day #368

Today's award goes to a trailer-thief in Louisville, Kentucky.

Louisville police say a man's ringing cell phone proves he is a thief.

Police say the man was so anxious to get rid of a stolen utility trailer that he posted it on Craigslist.

"When I saw the ad, I really had a feeling that it was our trailer," says Charletta Scales, who owns the trailer.

Charletta Scales and her family noticed the trailer was missing on Monday. Once they spotted an ad for the trailer on Craigslist, the Scales' made an appointment to meet with the man selling the trailer.

"The minute that we actually pulled up, there was nobody in sight," says Ryan Scales, Charletta's son. "As soon as we turned the corner, I mean, the gentleman that stole it didn't even have the thought to remove the reflective tape that we had on the trailer."

Metro Police arrived a short time later. That's when the suspect, 25-year-old Gerard Ray, changed his story.

"And he looked back and said I don't know anything about that," says officer David Peters, with LMPD.

That's when police came up with a plan to determine whether or not Ray was connected to the trailer and the Craigslist ad.

"What happened was I had the victim call the number that was listed on Craigslist and he had the phone on him and it started ringing," says Officer Peters.

I'm sure the cops greatly appreciated the doofidity of the thief!
