A year ago I wrote about a fan-fiction spin-off of the 'Lord Of The Rings', a 70-minute movie called 'Born Of Hope'. It was made on a shoestring budget, without any major studio involvement, but nevertheless proved surprisingly good.
I've just learned of another fan-fiction spin-off movie, one that was actually made before 'Born Of Hope'. This one's called 'The Hunt For Gollum'. It's shorter - 40 minutes instead of 70 - but seems (at first glance) to be of similar quality to 'Born Of Hope'. In fact, the movie's Web site notes that the lady behind 'Born Of Hope', Kate Madison, helped those behind 'The Hunt For Gollum' with their work as well.
Here are two trailers for 'The Hunt For Gollum'.
Here's a feature on how 'The Hunt For Gollum' was made.
And, at last, here's the movie itself.
Congratulations and thanks to all involved in making this movie. It's great to have fans so actively involved in such a classic piece of cinema as the 'Lord Of The Rings' series.
Speaking of LOTR, the prequel, 'The Hobbit', is to begin filming next month in New Zealand. The cast are gathering there in preparation for a year of hard work. Here's a video report of their first pre-production press conference.
I can hardly wait to see 'The Hobbit' in theaters! I've been a lifelong fan of J. R. R. Tolkien's books, and I think Peter Jackson's film adaptations are about as good as it's possible to make. More power to him!
