Six months after the earthquake
The Atlantic's In Focus photography series has published a fascinating article about the Japanese recovery from the earthquake and tsunami that struck that nation in March this year. The before-and-after pictures are sometimes astonishing, showing just how hard they're working to set things right. Here are a couple of examples.
There are many more images at the link. In most cases, you have to click on the first image in the series (taken during or immediately after the disaster) to see the second (the same scene, six months later). Recommended viewing.
While thinking of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami, and the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, it might be worth thinking about our own preparations for disaster, and how well we might be able to withstand such circumstances. As a starting point, I recommend two articles that Time magazine published in 2005 and 2008 on disaster preparedness. You might also learn something from my experiences during and after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005.
