I'd never thought of recycling an old-model smartphone into another form of device; but when you think about it, it's basically a small computer, isn't it? Lifehacker has several interesting suggestions for 'repurposing' old smartphones, including:
- A home-based phone handset;
- A remote control device;
- A portable gaming device; and many more.
The article also links to another with suggestions for reusing old tablet computers. Interesting stuff - and certainly far more useful than filling up garbage dumps with outdated, unwanted electronics!

I leave my old iphone in the car, plugged into the stereo system as a music player.
