Just following news headlines will make it clear that more and more people living in cities are confronted by so-called "active shooters": criminals and/or lunatics who start shooting for whatever reason, and often don't stop until they are neutralized. Consider these few headlines (out of many more I could have used) from the weekend just past:
- Mass shootings rock 2 US cities, leave 3 dead, 18 injured
- Judge signs murder arrest warrant for suspect in Forest Hill homicide
- Armed man captured after shootout with Oakland police
- Tulsa Teen, 19, Shot Outside Event Center as Suspect Remains at Large
Ed Monk has many years of experience in planning for such situations, and has trained not just individuals, but also police departments and major institutions, in how to handle them. He's written a short but very informative book titled "First 30 Seconds: The Active Shooter Problem".
Part of the blurb reads:
The author served as an active-duty US Army officer for over 20 years. Throughout this career, planning to give and receive deadly violence was a common, required task. Ten days after his Army retirement, he began teaching public high school, where violence was never allowed, discussed, or planned for. He was STUNNED when school leaders told him the school’s planned response during an Active Shooter attack was to gather in groups and wait to see if the killer or cops got to you first.
This experience started his study of the Active Shooter problem. This book is about what he found.
Massad Ayoob, well-known to readers of this blog, is one of the most authoritative and experienced firearms, self-defense and law enforcement instructors in the United States. He's released this nine-minute assessment of Ed Monk's book, and recommends it highly.
I've already bought my copy of Ed Monk's book. I recommend that any reader living in a major urban area should do likewise, and if you live in a more peaceful area, buy one anyway - because you never know who may end up in your area. It might be a very useful tool to initiate discussions with law enforcement, schools, libraries, etc in your part of the world.

Carry a gun and train with it to be good with it at many ranges.. Build scenarios, play the "what if"" game on best responses, including running away!!
An honest input; armed teachers are a great idea, but most teachers are liberal women, who would never touch a gun or use a gun.
Interesting. But my first reaction was ... stay away from black neighborhoods, black block parties, black yard parties, any parties that are primarily black attended.

I read Monk's book and was impressed. I served for 5 years as head of Safety for a mid-sized attraction in Central Florida. We trained for active shooters and it was very, very sobering. Even with rapid police deployment, we estimated dozens or scores of victims before the shooter could be countered. Against regulations, I carried a concealed pistol on me at all times. Better to be judged by twelve and all that.
kind of weird to me. back in the day we where taught to engage and kill the shooter as soon as possible. CIC training with the Brits who just got back from Belfast no less (late 1970s)
sniper drills where a big thing. then to see how the local cops always do things ass backwards ?
always figured if anything happened when I was near, I hoped to have the guts to run toward the gunfire. yeah. did that stupid shit when I was young, but now that I am much older ?

Each case is different but prompt response saves lives. 2017, Axtec, NM two students were killed by a former student. A San Juan County deputy and an Aztec city policeman arrived, broke a window, and entered the school. The shooter committed suicide when he heard them coming down a hall. I've heard this from one of the officers involved who happens to be a first cousin.
Compare this to the Uvalde, TX 2022 school shooting and the law enforcement response.
Ordered.
I'm on the church security team at my place of worship, so I bought and read that book, then passed it on to the rest of the team.
If the gun ban crowd would read it and take it to heart, they'd probably change their tunes. Unfortunately, they won't because it would destroy their preconditioned opinions.
Rule #1. Always carry...always. And do your utmost to never go anywhere large groups of people congregate. Festivals, sports events and other gatherings, especially outdoor events are a draw for the evil and the insane.

That's pure laziness on your part. Most black people aren't stupid, and there's more than a few whites that are.
Go by subculture markers, not skin tone, or you might get some nasty surprises.
