Yesterday the Dutch railway network was brought to its knees by coordinated sabotage attacks across the country.
There have been no trains at all across swathes of the northern and central Netherlands after objects were attached to the rails in at least 30 known locations. Remarkably, the national railway operator says that in some places where the obstacles had been cleared, new ones were quickly placed in the same location again once engineers and police had left the scene.
The nationwide coordinated sabotage campaign has used the railway’s own safety systems against it, with metal objects “deliberately placed” across the two tracks. Modern railways use electrical circuits between the two rails to detect where trains are and are not, the presence of a train’s wheels and axle spanning the two tracks closes the circuit and alerts the signalling system to its location.
By manually shorting the circuit, the saboteurs were able to trick the automatic system into turning the signals across the network red to prevent phantom trains from crashing into each other, which in turn forced the real trains to halt as well.

Because of the nature of the sabotage, which introduced phantom trains to the network, in several locations, level crossings were automatically activated to protect drivers from approaching trains that didn’t exist, spreading the network chaos onto the roads too.

As well as railway networks, climate extremists have targeted power infrastructure. The decentralised nature of both networks and the widespread disruption possible makes them apparently attractive targets for would-be extremists and left-wing terrorists, given that the widely spread infrastructure is difficult to closely watch, harden, or fortify.
In at least one case, European railways have been sabotaged by state actors, with Russia blamed for a bombing of a Polish railway in a “false flag” attack last year.
Germany’s power networks have also been repeatedly sabotaged by the hard left in recent months. Just last week, it is believed an extremist used dozens of homemade rockets to knock out high-voltage power substations to sabotage coal power plants nationwide, and Berlin’s power network is sometimes subjected to acts of arson with considerable knock-on effects.

Americans tend to forget (or ignore) the fact that we've had precisely the same sort of sabotage in this country for a long time now. That may be because the US is so much bigger than most other countries that we don't notice (or take notice of) what's happening in areas other than our own. The methods may differ, but the results are the same - disruption of vital infrastructure. For example:
- Attacks on the US electrical grid;
- Cyberattacks on water systems;
- Vulnerability of US mass transport and passenger rail systems;
- Terrorist threat to U.S. highway system.
Follow those links for more information. There's no need to mention the vulnerability of airline transport, so close to the anniversary of 9/11. Things have improved since then, but they're far from foolproof.
The thing is, so far we've experienced relatively uncoordinated attacks against the infrastructure on which our entire society and economy depend. Electricity may be cut in one area, water in another, rail traffic in a third, but until now they've been relative pinpricks from the perspective of the nation as a whole. That won't necessarily remain the case; in fact, it's very unlikely to stay that way. Terrorist nations such as Iran and enemies such as North Korea have had all the time in the world to infiltrate operatives across our southern border, and I've no doubt that several thousand such people are already here. If they were "activated" or "mobilized" by their source nations, they could do immense damage to our society by striking in a coordinated fashion across multiple critical systems.
- How could a fire department rush to extinguish a blaze caused by a terrorist bomb when the traffic management system has been disrupted, and the rail system sabotaged to cause all level crossings to shut down, and the water supply to a city to be interrupted by a cyberattack on the main pumping stations?
- How could emergency services cope with such a rash of issues all arising at once, particularly if the roads were further disrupted by spreading caltrops (which can easily be produced in mass quantities at negligible cost, using backyard garages and workshops) in strategic locations on the city's road network, disabling enough vehicles to block the road almost completely? They can be dumped out of the back of pickups or rented vans using buckets.
We don't know whether the attacks on Holland's railways were state-sponsored (probably by Russian agents trying to disrupt support for Ukraine) or arose from domestic political terrorism, but it doesn't really matter to those affected by them. Much of the country was brought to a halt at once, without warning.
That could happen to any major city in this country, and even to whole states, if enough people struck at enough critical infrastructure nodes. It would take weeks, if not months, to restore everything to normal operations. During that period, if you rely on critical supplies such as medication, special foods for kids or invalids, or enough gasoline or diesel to get from a remote location (e.g. a farm) to the nearest source of supply, you'd be S.O.L. That's why I make sure that my wife and myself maintain a year's supply of all critical prescription medication, including basic antibiotics in case they should be needed. That practice has come in very useful in the past, for ourselves (being able to take an antibiotic for repeated infections) and to supply friends with medication (for example, during the COVID emergency). Oh - and don't forget critical OTC supplies like painkillers and allergy medications. How miserable would you be if an emergency arose that forced you to spend many hours outside, or without air conditioning or filtration, during peak allergy season? Since both my wife and I have allergy problems, you can bet we stash enough of those meds to see us through a couple of months.
For that matter, it's worth keeping at least one month's worth of food and water on hand, in case of an emergency. Forget the commercial "72-hour" kits (like these, for example); they're better than nothing, but don't hold all you'll need, even for so short a period. They're designed to make you feel like you're prepared, while enriching those who make and supply them. Get the foods you normally eat, particularly canned or dry foods, and put an extra supply away for a rainy day. Also, keep on hand a way to prepare that food if your electric or gas stove suddenly stops working; and have a way to dispose of garbage and human waste. (Yes, that does mean a reserve supply of toilet paper and paper towels, plus a spade to bury everything critical, because it's unlikely regular garbage collection will happen.) Think of all the little things we take for granted in our everyday lives, and ask yourself: "What would I do if I could no longer get this? What would I no longer be able to do? Can I live with that? What about alternatives or substitutes?"
I want to re-emphasize the importance of water supply. We've just seen, in recent weeks, multiple attempted cyberattacks on water supply systems in several states. I'm sure we'll see more. Plan on needing at least two gallons per person per day for all purposes (double the "official" recommendation, which is a minimum to preserve life, and doesn't include luxuries such as washing yourself, laundry, etc.). Unless using sealed containers, empty and refill your water supply every six months or so. Water containers are freely available; some (such as two-liter soda bottles) are free, once you've used up their original contents and cleaned them thoroughly. A very economical solution is to buy 5-gallon buckets with lids (preferably made from food-grade plastic) and reserve them for water storage only. They're not ideal, but they'll do the job. (A full bucket of water weighs over 40 pounds, so if lifting heavy weights is a problem, buy 2-gallon or 3.5-gallon buckets instead.) Finally (and particularly if you can't keep more than a few days' worth of water on hand), have a good-quality water filtration system in case purified water runs out. They range from a few dollars to several hundred. Buy the best your budget can afford, and then buy another one (or a less expensive backup system), because you simply cannot afford to be without drinking water. For almost all of us, it's our single most critical emergency resource - and one of the most neglected.
It's not just natural disasters we have to worry about: it's all the others that can catch us unawares. The Netherlands is finding that out right now.

To expand on your point, the "Greens" have been systematically decommissioning & destroying the fossil fuel power stations and replacing them with "green power" [YOU WILL USE GREEN POWER, NO CHOICE]. Rocks thrown in the middle of a solar cell field and the "green power" goes away. 'Accidentally' digging a ditch thru the underground cable from a windmill would have the same effect, destroying the windings due to power surge.
And without fossil fuel generation stations, the area served will be without power for an extended period. (How long to get new solar panels and replace them, assuming the can be sourced?)
I don't dispute the advice, spot on... however, you seem to forget our own government is the most likely candidate in this type of scenario, not a foreign agent?

when I was stationed over there, and I'm sure it hasn't changed...They shopped daily for the daily meals, they rarely had any long term food storage....it just not in their "culture" or they don't have the space.....it is crowded. As far as the actors involved....I believed that is is the "Eco Terrorist groups," they have been disrupting things and blocking traffic and commerce for years, and the authorities have been treating them with kid gloves.I believe that over "Russian actors".
We have a collection of 5 gallon water bottles, used for coolers. There are nice racks to allow stacking them and manual pumps to avoid lifting them. Pretty inexpensive and our local water company was happy to deliver. They will also exchange old for fresh for a good price.
All it would take is a couple of boxes of roofing nails to fall off the back of a pickup truck on the Washington DC beltway in a few key spots and the entire area would become one giant gridlock.

We refilled out garage water storage this weekend, two stackable 160 gallon water barrels. Pretty slick actually but you have to be careful where you stack 3000 pounds of water. A few ouces of preservative means I don't have to do it again for five years. The smaller 30 gallon barrels are next.
GMTA, Peter: Went to Costco for an eyeglass repair and to replenish some SHTF supplies (bacon bits, chocolate covered almonds...). My VA glasses use a non-standard screw but the refreshingly-competent optical lady was able to McGuyver a fix. My not-so-local VA no longer offers walk-in glasses repair. Couldn't find the supplies. Moral: times may be difficult even without SHTF.
Yes...bad actors, both foreign and domestic, have been waging asymmetrical war against the US for a long time. And it's only going to get worse.

Tangent: SHTF comms. This just happened: a disabled client fell down; both the lifeline and phone were out of reach. She used Amazon Alexa to call my cellphone. I'm 100 miles away in another state. I called her local PD who dispatched the FD EMTs. I thanked the EMTs in real time via her Ring camera. Lotsa fragile technology was in use.
power grid sub stations are at risk. we don't make them anymore. they are all imported. that alone should scare you. I will not go into details as who knows
who else reads this. but if one was to attack enough sub stations at the same time. well, all hell would break loose. most home generator system run on propane or natural gas.. most have a propane tank that will last 4 days to a week at most. if you have a portable setup, only use non corn gasoline
in it. trust me, you thank me later. also , non corn gasoline lasts much longer than corn gasoline does. buying it after I think 10/1 gets you a better grade of fuel as it has a higher BTU rating do to colder weather.
what I like to see is a hook up for generators that have electric start have some sort of jumper cable that you could hook up to your car/truck.

always wanted to get/make some sort of wood gas setup to run a larger standby generator setup.
the one problem with all generators is noise. getting a setup where you can use a truck muffler to keep the noise down would be nice too.
Don't forget the burning of food production and distribution points as well as sabotage at refineries. hundreds of those recently.
Don't forget the biggest source of fresh water in almost every house, your water heater. I've got a 50 gallon that will keep me and my wife in water for several weeks if we ration it. Having a septic tank also makes disposing of bodily fluids less problematic. We can use hand washing and dish water for flushing.

If the generator has electric start, it must needs have a BATTERY to provide power for the starter motor (since for it to be needed, there's no grid power).
If you ensure that said generator's starter battery is 12vdc, it's the same process as jumping any other 12vdc started internal combustion engine, basically hook your car/truck battery in parallel to provide power to start it.
Now, can you drive your car/truck to the generator to hook up?
If no, simply remove the battery, carry it to the generator and jump away.
Or get a lithium jump pack.
Typically, the starter battery should be trickle charged while the grid is up.
Adding a Battery Tender or equivalent will work fine or cranking the genset monthly (like you should) will provide charging for the starter battery.
I swapped my old pull start genset for a larger inverter genset (with electric start) a couple of days into the Hurricane Helene outage (12 days here).
Due to local shortages of gensets, I had my son-in-law buy one and drive 3 hours to meet me halfway.
I wanted a multi fuel genset, but also wanted the extra Kw, so I wound up with a strictly gasoline motor.
Now there's a larger version 11.2 Kw that'll run on propane, natural gas or gasoline.
Debating an upgrade since I have a 325 gallon propane tank already for my backup central furnace (emergency heat source for the heat pump).
Probably I'll just buy a propane conversion kit and install it myself.
Having a 365 ft well, as long as I have electricity to run the pump I have water.
Heating is covered by my 30+ year old Buck Stove, heats my log cabin just fine.

the power grid is the one main weak point that can cripple everything else. no power, pumps will not work- no water in the pipes. gasoline pumps stop working. food storage goes south real fast.
without electric power, we will go back in time to the 1870's everything runs on electric power.
attended a lecture at CGSC back in the 1980's on EMPs. inside of 5 minutes, you could hear a pin drop. EVERYONE was listening to what this guy was saying. but without wide spread electric power, over 1/2 of the country would be dead inside of 6 months.
390 paces to the Gulf and five feet of katrina in my kitchen so I'm always ready during the season to run or stay for a storm. But you get help a couple of days to weeks after a big storm, red cross/national guard/fema/ law enforcement show up. Storm preps are short term and even so almost everyone was lacking stuff that they could have used. A long drawn out disaster is different. I've got my Berkey and my generators and non eth gas and beans and guns. But I won't last long if outside help isn't coming. It's unlikely that I'd learn to survive amid sharply reduced abundance faster than hungrier people would kill me and take my beans and can opener. Reasonable (and discreet) prepping is smart. Some disasters are completely unreasonable.
For emergencies keep a plastic drop cloth and tape in the bathroom. If you have enough warning, cover the bathtub with the drop cloth to the brim with any extra at the back to use as a cover. Fill to the brim and you have a lot of treated water to use either to drink or flush. The rare use won't cause any medical problems. Cost about a buck or two. Also get a kids inflatable swimming pool and a drop cloth to cover. 500 gallons will last a long time (if you have the space).
Barring state-operators attacking critical infrastructure, this crap by environmental whackjobs or other crazies stops at the exact moment the lawful government authorities get dead serious about stopping it. I will leave "stopping it" undefined, to spare those with tender sensibilities.
I invested in a freeze dryer earlier this year and have been putting things through it that fit our diets. Short of the initial investment of equipment and supplies, if you use it instead of purchase pre-made buckets of emergency food, you can save a lot of money doing it yourself, and know that what you are processing are things you are able to eat if you have dietary restrictions. Plus, storing dry goods using the same guidelines will improve your longer term supply. The catch, as there always is one, is needing water to reconstitute it, as well as having the means to heat/cook it. But I look at it being able to have shelf stable stuff for me and the couple of kids that live locally. I have also made the determination that you can't be prepared in every imaginable way, so picking the few that are the most critical is where to focus. Some prep areas bleed over into others, sometimes in ways that are not obvious. It's all about thinking ahead and planning things through various scenarios, as well as knowing you will not be able to cover them all.
