As the mid-term elections draw near, the political turmoil around the world is being reflected in our own national politics. There's order, counter-order and disorder; there are threats and counter-threats; there's propaganda and publicity material out the wazoo. Sometimes it's hard to think straight, what with all the noise about the past, and the present, and the future.
Speaking as a Christian, I think it's very important for us to understand that the wisdom of God is not to be found in the midst of all this shouting and tumult.
The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.”
Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.
Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
(1 Kings 19:11-13)
Ignore the political winds, and earthquakes, and fires. For we who believe (and even for those who don't, for that matter), God is still in his heaven and is still in command of all that is. It's his voice we need to heed, not the screeches and cacophony of those who love their own voices too much.
Peter
