The short answer is "yes".
As recently as 1900 in developed countries like Ireland, England and Germany, if your mother was crazy you were probably not going to live to see your first birthday ... In total, crazy-genes had a high probability of "dead-ending". In those days the pool of crazy people resulted from random meetings of recessive genes or in new mutations.
Flash-forward to the permissive, Welfare-State.
... back when "crazy-genes" self-extinguished we experienced a rate of approximately 5% seriously crazy people. Now the crazy-people genes are subsidized rather than exposed to Darwinian selection and the numbers are growing much faster (due to high risk behaviors) than the numbers of not-crazy people.

I hadn't made the connection in genetic terms. Like almost everybody, I've noted the increase in the number of crazy-behaving "street people": talking to themselves, gesticulating wildly even though they're not talking to anybody, behaving very oddly and sometimes self-destructively, and so on. However, without thinking about it much, I'd assumed that much of this was due to the lack of mental health care (after the closure of most sanatoriums and institutional mental health care facilities). I hadn't thought about the fact that the sheer survival rate of everyone, on average, also meant that more "crazy-genes" were also surviving, and therefore slowly increasing in proportion to the rest of the population.
So . . . if that's the case, how are we going to deal with the problem? We can't very well simply execute those with "crazy-genes" - not and still regard ourselves as human beings. On the other hand, we do them (and ourselves, and our society) no favors by allowing them to increasingly take over our streets. What next?

We obviously can. Do we revile mothers who hire doctors to murder their own children in the womb as non-human?

I've seen evidence of the genetic tendency to crazy. For the full effect we see now, just add DRUGS.
Some of those people talking to themselves are actually talking on a blue tooth phone receiver. Back when that was new, I noticed several people in restaurants laughing and speaking as if there was someone in the same booth. I'm a dinosaur - new fangled gadgets !
Might be an easier reason than genetics. After WWII, we had good jobs for fathers. Mothers stayed home and raised the kids. It was a Christian based nation at it's peak. Then Dear leaders killed the single working parent economy. Mothers went to work. Government schools did their dirty work. Today is the result. Just got back from getting the pup dog food and people are driving crazy. A light turned green for me but the cross traffic just kept going against their red light. 5 cars I counted after I had the green. Just nuts. We are sinking to a lower form of human. Will we be the next USSR or commie China or even the next Africa?
Up until I read the blog this morning I figured the (seemingly) higher number of crazies I was seeing was because we have more media, I'd figured the percentages of nuts/normal was the same.
I can see the logic in what he is saying, this is a problem!

Don't worry. I've found that sanity is rather overrated.
Several years back when we were in Catania, I saw a man having a conversation with himself, gesticulating, while walking down the street.
I mentioned it to my wife who said "He was on the phone. Didn't you see the earpiece and mike?"
The easiest solution would be the past solution. Reopen the nut houses and put the American crazies inside. The foreign crazies, deport back to their home countries, with their passports stamped ineligible to enter the US.
I am firmly against the murdering of babies and children. Those who were born wrong, are loved by Jesus just as much as he loves you and me. We should have them placed somewhere they can't hurt us or themselves. Simply by taking them out of society, it will begin to improve things. There is no need to purge them.
I don't know when this idea of (it was ok to murder babies, children, and those who are mentally not there) came about, but it needs to be shut down with extreme prejudice.
I am typically not for government spending, but I feel this is one area that is worthy of spending my taxes on. Now that being said again Americans only. Not the illegals who are crazy, not those born to illegals who are crazy. They and their families need to be deported.

So now 50+% of people are carrying crazy genes ? That cannot be good for society but it does explain the multitudes of crazies that running around today in the USA and the EU.
I know several "bipolar" people, two in my near family. They act ok then they go crazy and self medicate to stop hearing the voices in their heads. My theory from talking with them is that the left and right hemispheres of their brains hate each and the fighting goes active where the person can hear the disputes.
I'm curious if we really have more, or if they are more visible.
Additionally, are fewer of them dying young, like everyone else, so they survive longer and are more likely to reproduce?
I don't trust the statistics or "experts" enough to take an informed position on this.

Modern medicine is not very good at keeping people healthy. But it's real good at keeping people from dying quickly... including the insane who in the past would have self selected themselves out of the gene pool.
Quite a solution there, ship 'em out, let somebody else kill them.
The numbers are probably worse than you think. Anti-psycho-meds allow people that might otherwise show up on your radar screen to "function" or at least not draw too much attention. These people may not be as visible as the examples you cite, but they remain in the gene pool...and they (probably) vote...a double-whammy.
There are also just flat out more people now too.
Like let's assume 1% of a population is crazy and this is constant. If you have 100 people, you'd have 1 crazy person. But then if the population increases to 1000, you now have 10 crazies.
Though I do think the link is probably mostly right, we can't discount the fact that there are now 8 or 9 bil people on Earth.

Some of the problem is solving itself with birth rates falling below population replacement. Also crazies like furries, trans ,especially those that used surgery or drugs to make their fantasy permanent. I think Some problems come from simple things like food adatives like food dyes. One of my grandkids behaves extremely aggressively on one of the food dyes! (Banned in Europe because of this) Kids can show mental problems because their parents are so wrapped in drugs that the kids have no guidance, also in the past some people with crazy tendencies as children were guided to more normal behavior by attention, love and discipline instead of the current electronic haze with both adults and kids!
One solution that might be able to get traction would be to make welfare benefits for the third child contingent on both parents being sterilized. Make DNA testing mandatory to prove paternity. Give the parents some time window like two months to get off the dole. If they cannot, then snip-snip, snip-snip.
For both parents you would need to know who the father is, knowing the father is not a requirement for aid.
Indeed. I used to work in Boston and had about a 1/3 of a mile walk from North Station to my office. Down near North Station there were a fair number of indigent talking to themselves and others. But there were always hordes of folks walking along appearing to talk to themselves on the then recently ubiquitous earbuds. I then realized that if you brought my Grandmother forward from the '70s she would place the earbud users in the same class as the indigent crazies at North Station and justifiably. Not the sharpest knives in the drawer, I was present at least 3 times when people having a conversation marched out on to N. Washington street without the crossing light. This can be (but was not luckily) a lethal mistake in Boston.
There was a belief that medication would cure mental illness. That was part of the basis of the deinstitutionalization movement.
It failed to take into consideration that if taking medication makes you feel normal and not taking meds makes you feel like a God, then what do you think people will do.
@Bob, sigh. If you want to pay for them and their care, go right ahead. Don't demand that the rest of us do, too. Suicidal empathy is not the solution, but the cause.

Civilization promotes survival of the unfit. War and the seven horsemen promote culling of the unfit. Civs rarely last very long the then the war and horsemen do their thing. It has been a cycle for most all populations: boom and bust.
The cycle has always been with us and always will until we evolve into a smarter species that avoids such cycles via promoting the arithmetic mean. The caretakers...
