In the preceding article, I quoted the Bible about how to raise children: "Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it".
It sounds like this mother had done her best to "train up her child" in the right way, but he decided not to listen - so last week she taught him a brutally hard lesson.
A Loyola University student on his way to school robbed a Metra conductor at gunpoint Tuesday afternoon because he was hungry and needed money to get some food before class — and that’s according to his defense attorney.
Zion Brown, 18, was arrested later that night after his mother recognized him in news coverage of the robbery and drove him to the Calumet City police department to surrender, prosecutors said.

Just think how much better life would be in our cities if all mothers treated their criminal children in the same way! Full marks to her for taking her parenting duties seriously.
One wishes the kid's lawyer had learned something about "tough love" in his younger days. Judging by his comments to the judge, he didn't, and I suppose it's too late to teach him now.

His defense is "...he was hungry and needed food." Otherwise, he has an appointed attorney, will have to try to plead for a lesser charge, and if placed in prison, will sharpen his skills.
In some states, he would have never gone more than twenty feet from his attempted robbery.
Yet another "guess the race" story. Sad.
In 1975, I found myself far from my home state with no money.
I went into a restaurant and traded a half hour's worth of mopping for a meal.
Kudos to her for doing the right thing!
I'm a little surprised that the mom wasn't charged with some sort of crime for exercising parental guidance. The Loonie Lefties don't want parents acting as parents should, and have traditionally throughout history. They want all decisions made by the government, without parental involvement.
Wait... A student at Loyola university in Chicago? Isn't that a Catholic school? And a private university, too? I thought one just didn't walk into a school like that without a good upbringing.
While mom's actions are laudable and good, a student at that school robbing at gunpoint "because he's hungry" strongly suggests there's something missing in the upbringing. Some Catholic teachings, for example? How about some work for that food instead of stealing?
At best, she's trying to play a very late game of catch up; trying to teach some of those upbringing lessons too late.
SiG, I caution against judging mom too harshly. This reminds me a bit of The Parable of the Sower. Sometimes the lessons just don’t “take”. Even parents who do their best to teach their children right from wrong sometimes have kids that go astray from the path.
Was she not putting food on the table the way parents are supposed to do? If that's the case, she bears some of the blame for what he did.
I call BS. He was not hungry, just used that as an excuse and bid to get pity.
