There is one scenario where it was shot down on purpose. Considering its country of origin was satanic (Nationial Socialist German), and the host country too (Communist Internationale, courtesy of Frank the Cripple), and remembering the conditions prevailing and subsequent.......all according to plan. When will you wake up?

Only 35 people died out of 97 souls on board. Probably due to hydrogen fires burn up

It is amazing anyone survived. If they had been any higher, all 97 would have died.

I got to lift a piece of Zeppelin structure that used a Beryllium alloy, and it was much lighter than a similar piece of Aluminum. I'm not sure of their relative strengths, etc. but considering that it can be toxic (Beryllium Oxide power, anyone?) I can see why it fell out of use.

My mother in law was there when it happened.

re: Hamsterman

There are a good many "dangerous" things I have worked with or would be willing to work with. I stay WELL CLEAR of beryllium. That stuff scares me.

Terrible tragedy. Almost as bad as a Turkey Drop in Cincinnati.

Here we go - on the Hindinburg fire, that's been argued since it happened - tragic accident, or sabotage?

The Hindenburg didn't de-static before dropping all their mooring lines and the combo of hydrogen leaking out of the gasbags (because H2 is a slippery sonofamolecule as it's so small) and the aluminum magnesium paint on the outer shell and you get a really good fire.

You can tell it's the aluminum magnesium paint on fire because you can see the flames.

Too bad Germany wasn't sitting on a natural cache of helium like the US is.
