did that on a hill once with a tractor while loading it onto a trailer.

once was enough.

It was probably a guy who sells pickups for a living who told them to do it this way :)

Put in park and set the e-brake. It's just that easy.

What in blue blazes was wrong with the bloke driving the vehicle onto the trailer?.

So would you say that the trailer jerk-knifed?

stay safe.

GreyLocke, the physics of the situation doesn't work that way... the weight on the trailer lifted the tongue, causing the rear axle of the towing truck to come off the ground so park or e-brake has been removed from the equation.

A safer procedure would include 1) chocking the trailer (front & rear) or having stabilizing jacks / ramps with blocks to prevent extreme weight shift and 2) either someone in the towing truck applying the service brakes (to hold the front axle in place) or towing truck in 4-wheel drive and park.

You can load equipment, on a hill, alone, if you have some common sense. Unfortunately, common sense is like deodorant, the people who need it most never use it.

Skidmark, that is a great take on the situation!

Video was worth a buck. I'd give five for audio of the doofii conversation.
