It's Iditarod time again . . .

. . . and the sled dogs will be running their hearts out in the ice and snow.  I've never seen working animals who enjoy themselves quite so much as sled dogs, particularly when they're running hard.  Their sheer joie de vivre puts almost everything and everyone else to shame.

For overseas readers, who may not know much about the race, here's a brief introduction.

And here are two video clips from National Geographic about sled dogs.

Lovely animals!

And when the race is over, you can join in Alaska's semi-unofficial anthem.

"I've never seen working animals who enjoy themselves quite so much as sled dogs" Your education is obviously missing a few chapters. You've never seen real bird dogs at work.

You should probably let your readers know that the Iditarod started last Monday; the teams are more than halfway to Nome, now.

Great song by Hobo Jim, but more moving to me is the Alaska Flag Song. I get teary every time I hear it. I lived 25 years up there, til my body kind of fell apart. No more hunting, backpacking, hiking....
