Looking at the offloading process, one hopes nobody expected to drive away with them at once!

I wonder if they were pre-iced to protect them from the salt water spray?
If one looks at pictures and videos from WWII of the convoys to Murmansk and Archangel, you see the same things. Crews had to go out into the weather and chop of the ice with axes lest the ship roll.
