I gather it's cold up North!

My sympathies to my readers in the Northern parts of the US and Canada. I understand you're freezing at the moment. This picture of the South Haven lighthouse on Lake Michigan drives home the point!

Brrr! I'm shivering just looking at it!

On the brighter side, ski resorts all across the Northern and Western US are apparently enjoying a booming trade. I suppose that's some compensation - provided your customers are sufficiently skilled to take advantage of the conditions.

Unfortunately, not all of them appear to be sufficiently skilled . . .

Oh wow, that looked like it hurt. Not as a bad as that Romanian (?) guy who got all sideways on the ski jump, but nevertheless, I'll stay here with both feet on the ground where they belong, thanks.

Heh! I wonder who got skewered by the runaway skis?

We're tough here in Buffalo - we can handle a little cold (easier said from in front of the computer than hanging around outside). 5 degrees and dropping right now.

We're actually looking forward to it getting colder here in Anchorage - it warmed up to 42 when the low moved in, and now all the roads and streets are full of running water on ice. Winter should ideally stay between -15 and +25, in my not-so humble opinion. The colder is it, the firmer and more manageable the snow. (Snow at -30 is almost as firm and grippy as concrete for walking and driving.)

On the other hand, my legs hurt where my jeans touch them at -30 if I'm not wearing long underwear, and my car hates starting below -20 because I haven't gotten around to putting a block heater in. (I live on the coast! It's supposed to be warm here!) So I vote no colder than -15.

Minus 27 early that day, ignoring wind chill. The coldest it's been here my entire life.
