Doofus Of The Day #238

While on the subject of hot stuff (see the post below), a German householder had a really, really bad idea recently.

A German gardener's house was left a smouldering wreck on Friday after he set it on fire while trying to get rid of the weeds with the help of a flame-thrower, police said.

After accidentally setting his hedge alight, the 54-year-old's garden shed was soon also engulfed in flames and despite efforts to extinguish the fire with a garden hose, the blaze spread to the roof of the house.

Seven firemen were needed to put out the blaze in Tangstedt near Hamburg in northern Germany, which occurred on Thursday. Police said the house was now uninhabitable.

There's more at the link.

I'm a bit speechless at the doofidity of this householder. I mean . . . clearing weeds with a flame-thrower??? WTF??? Whatever happened to the more conventional means of trowel, fork, spade and weed-killer spray?

"Flame thrower" seems a bit extreme. It appears that he was using one of the propane weed burners that are common in this part of the country.

However, he is still a doofus for not using it properly.

I HAVE a propane weed burner. Works like a charm, just don't use it on the poison ivy. I'm just sayin'

I've got one too - and in a few decades of use I haven't managed to burn down house, barn or even tool shed. How DID I manage this?

Well... there's this really cool stuff called common sense that seems to create an invisible force field of safety around people who use it. Amazing stuff - and free for the taking.

It means you don't have to use chemicals, which can be a big deal for some people.
