Adding fuel to the fire?

I'm a bit perplexed by the latest invention of India's defense establishment.

Indian scientists are to put one of the world's hottest chilli powders into hand grenades.

They say the devices will be used to control rioters and in counter-insurgency operations.

Defence researchers say the idea is to replace explosives in small hand grenades with a certain variety of red chilli to immobilise people without killing them, reports the BBC.

The chilli, known as Bhut Jolokia, is said to be 1,000 times hotter than commonly used kitchen chilli.

There's more at the link.

I'm not sure about this. After all, one wants to cool down a tense situation, not heat it up some more! Anyway, here's a video clip of an idiot a brave man trying one of these peppers.

If, after watching that, you'd like to try cooking with it, here are some recipes.

I ate half a habanero the one time. It was mind-altering. Tasty little bugger, though.
