He who dies with the most toys, still dies!

Stephan Pastis points that out with tongue in cheek in yesterday's "Pearls Before Swine" comic strip.  Click the image to see a larger version at its Web page.

That does seem to be a very American response to emergencies:  "Let's buy things to keep us alive!".  Sadly, most of us never bother to learn to use those things as they should be.  We also load ourselves down with so many of them that we're immobilized.  Those who are less burdened, faster on their feet, and more knowledgeable and experienced, will end up benefiting from what we've bought - because we'll be too dead to care.

A few cogent sayings attributed to Clint Smith President and Director
of Thunder Ranch:

"Beware the man who only has one gun. He probably knows how to use it!"

"An armed man will kill an unarmed man with monotonous regularity."

"A reporter did a human-interest piece on the Texas Rangers. The reporter recognized the Colt Model 1911 the Ranger was carrying and asked him 'Why do you carry a 45?' The Ranger responded, 'Because they don't make a 46.'"

"When seconds count, the cops are just minutes away."
