Many people today have little or no religious faith. Regular readers will know that I'm a Christian, and believe in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. If you don't, that's your right to choose.
A recent post over at DiveMedic's place made me do a double-take.
Nuclear power is the power of the stars. The Chernobyl reactor melted down in 1986. The area, even aquafers with a formation period measured in decades, was heavily contaminated with radionuclides, in some cases more than 100,000 times higher than background radiation.
There is a connection to that in the Christian bible. Let me explain:
The third angel sounded his trumpet, and a great star, blazing like a torch, fell from the sky on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water— the name of the star is Wormwood. A third of the waters turned bitter, and many people died from the waters that had become bitter. The Ukrainian word for the common wormwood plant (Artemisia vulgaris) is “Чорнобиль” (chornóbyl).
Striking, isn’t it?
There's more at the link.
I might add that DiveMedic is not Christian - he proclaims himself to be atheist - but he can still recognize the similarities between history and that text from Revelation. It becomes even more interesting when one realizes that the Chernobyl reactors are right in the middle of the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia.
Coincidence? Yes, I think most of us will buy that. More than coincidence? Who can say for sure?
Makes you think, doesn't it?

Heard this some time ago from a man named Irvin Baxter, who came to our church and did a couple of lessons on eschatology. I won't say I agree with everything he says, but he usually has good reasoning for it.
I remember when I found out what Chernobyl meant back in the early 90s. It was and is eye opening.
Down south Texas they mine Uranium. They inject something into the ground, then pump it out down stream. The uranium is in solution. They use monitor wells to keep track of everything. If it gets loose into an aquifer, it would be a Biblical size event.
"and many people died from the waters that had become bitter".
Not so sure about that. Apart from "cancer clusters" (which are generally specious attempts are picking deep pockets), I thought almost all the people who died were reactor workers. None of whom died from drinking the water.
I have wondered about the Anti Christ. According to revelation he will be reported as dead for 3 days and then show up alive. And also the place, or non place of America in all this. Does make one wonder.
We do seem to be entering one of the times when Providence wants to make us undergo large changes.
I am a Christian also. I found the comment by Divemedic striking also. I did not expect that of him.
Humans have a tendency to see the "coincidences" that serve their inherent biases.
I work in the healthcare system in the Midwest. Cannot tell you the exact number, but the number of patients from the Ukraine that had cancer from Chernobyl, specifically thyroid cancer, was well into double digits. That is one hospital halfway across the world. No idea of other pathologies.
Native uranium is only weakly radioactive - it needs to be refined to get the dangerous stuff concentrated. The earth itself is radioactive as is exposure to the sky. Flying will expose you to radiation ... and why does the dentist disappear when giving you an X-ray?
And credit then to DiverMedic who saw a 'coincidence' that simply didn't fit his 'bias'. His eyes must be open.
serve their inherent biases?
Or connect obvious dots?
You sound like a vaccinated atheist.
I think my uncle gave me a copy of The Late Great Planet Earth back in the early 80's, pointing out all the happenings back then with the signs of the Apocalypse. I never did find where the 'sons of Ham' being destroyed in a war with the 'people of the islands' came from, as it wasn't in any Bible I had, so maybe that was 'artistic license'
Very interesting... Very...
I found it interesting that in Madagascar during Covid, they were using Wormwood tea like others used invermectin to mitigate the effects of the virus.
A few issues with that suggestion.
Chernobyl was an obsolete FISSION nuclear plant. Stars run on FUSION.
According to Google translate, "chernobyl" is not the word for wormwood. That would be полин, гіркота, or нехворощ. I still struggle with English. Ukrainian is beyond me; maybe a real speaker can correct me on this.
In the passage, Wormwood is the star, not the location it struck.
Nor did the nuke plant "blazing like a torch, [fall] from the sky".
And it contaminated one region. Not "a third of the rivers and on the springs of water" of the world.
There does seem to be a lack of mention of America in prophecy. With the pathway we've taken, I don't rule out God allowing some sort of large judgment to take us out of the equation. Truth be told, I'd rather go to Heaven early than live in the world described in Revelations.
Nero, WW1, WW2 were The End too.
I call it "newspaper eschatology", really seeing what wished to be there.
Christ's return is imminent; we will suffer the consequences for our stupid or evil actions in this world also until the supernatural event that will require no interpretation.
Ah, being a teenager in the Bible Belt in the 90’s. This makes me remember having a picnic with my Evangelical Friends, poring over the book of Revelation and mapping recent current events to the book. That’s the first time I heard about the Chernobyl- Wormwood connection. I was their token Catholic friend.
When I have indulged in Bible Prophecy Mapping. I think references to Philadelphia are my Hope, my pessimistic side sees us as the Whore of Babylon. And the country with no walls.
I recently got a book on Millennial Cults in Europe during the early 1000’s. I haven’t read it yet. But I’d love to know what they were mapping to the rebuilding of the temple…. Outremer?
Regarding the thyroid cancer: Maybe....during and after the meltdown, a radioactive isotope of iodine was released. This would be absorbed by the thyroid gland and would probably stay there for some time, emitting alpha particles. This is why in the US (and maybe elsewhere) who live near a nuclear power plant are given potassium iodide tablets to be used in an emergency. Taking the potassium iodide pill "tops up" your thyroid so any radioactive iodine is ignored.
