In the light of current events in Milwaukee, I think it's timely to read and re-read this essay from Walter E. Williams, who is himself a black man.
Customs, traditions, moral values, and rules of etiquette are behavioral norms, transmitted mostly by example, word of mouth, and religious teachings. As such, they represent a body of wisdom distilled through the ages by experience and trial and error.
The nation’s liberals—along with the education establishment, pseudo-intellectuals, and the courts—have waged war on traditions, customs and moral values. Many people have been counseled to believe that there are no moral absolutes. Instead, what’s moral or immoral is a matter of personal convenience, personal opinion, what feels good, or what is or is not criminal.
We no longer condemn or shame self-destructive and rude behavior, such as out-of-wedlock pregnancies, dependency, cheating, and lying. We have replaced what worked with what sounds good.
The abandonment of traditional values has negatively affected the nation as a whole, but blacks have borne the greater burden. This is seen by the decline in the percentage of black two-parent families. Today, a little over 30 percent of black children live in an intact family, where as early as the late 1800s, over 70 percent did. Black illegitimacy in 1938 was 11 percent, and that for whites was 3 percent. Today, it’s respectively 73 percent and 30 percent.
It is the height of dishonesty, as far as blacks are concerned, to blame our problems on slavery, how white people behave, and racial discrimination. If those lies are not exposed, we will continue to look for external solutions when true solutions are internal. Those of us who are old enough to know better need to expose these lies.
There's more at the link. It's well worth reading in full.
I look at the behavior of the feral scum in Milwaukee, and shake my head in utter disbelief that their community can - and obviously does - allow this to continue. It certainly wouldn't continue in the area where I live. The local community, not the police, would be the first to rise up in righteous anger and stop the perpetrators in their tracks. It wouldn't be a matter of race, either. Many of our local black and hispanic populations would be the very first to reach for a baseball bat, or a gun, and stop this sort of nonsense hard and fast.
If you allow a community to degrade and deteriorate until it's no longer a community at all, but nothing more than a collection of real or imagined grievances . . . Milwaukee happens.

Another news report to be entered into evidence why someone would drive through protesters blocking a road instead of waiting until the road clears.
Three long blasts on the horn then start moving, and don't stop until you find a police station in a stable neighborhood...
"Officer, I was in fear for my life and safety."

As Dr. Williams said: when your positive role models are all gone, then the negative role models that remain will have to do. And the results are what we see on the news every flippin night, or so it seems.
"The nation’s liberals—along with the education establishment, pseudo-intellectuals, and the courts—have waged war on traditions, customs and moral values."
Well, yeah. Those traditions, customs and moral values are nothing more than cultural hegemony. They must be undermined so that the socialist utopia can arise unhampered. It's good to know of the idea of cultural hegemony but the Left have been like the neocons in Iraq, totally unprepared to build something to replace what they tore down. And when you leave a vacuum, a lot of dirt and trash rushes in to fill the void.
As long as such festivities occur in places like Milwaukee, Baltimore, Ferguson and New Haven, they will resemble what we've become used to seeing.
When they occur in places like Dallas, Phoenix, Indianapolis and Boise, however, the procedure will be different. A lot different. Which is why they haven't happened in those places and probably never will.
Along those lines, I fail to understand why someone who depends on a retail store for their family's livelihood doesn't take a somewhat, shall we say, "greater interest" in the property. And also at this point, I'm baffled why there are still retail outlets in certain areas of certain cities. Seems like a guaranteed losing proposition easily remedied by relocating.
TXRed beat me to it. The father of the dead man said it....but Walter Williams had better syntax.

Peter, I wonder if you ever saw this in South Africa after apartheid fell? Or did you not see this type of thing until you moved here ?
I ask because I know some African immigrants (Nigeria), and they want nothing to do with "locals".

@Charlie: In my (extensive) experience throughout Africa, many, perhaps most, Africans regard with contempt and disgust those few American blacks whom they've met. They call them 'whites in black skins'. I can assure you, if the average black African had the opportunity to live in the poorest, meanest ghetto in the USA, but was guaranteed the opportunity to work his way upward, he'd willingly commit mass murder for the chance to get here. They can't understand the mentality that says "Others owe me a living".
@Peter: Hence a question I asked elsewhere: 'is it race or is it culture?'.
See, I think it's culture. Unfortunately, the cultural damage is so serious it's going to take drastic measures to change course. Unpleasant, but... this is what happens when an infection gets out of hand.
