Yes, that's insane - but what a rush!

I'm obliged to reader R. D. for sending me the link to this video clip of Austrian freestyle skier Markus Eder letting it all hang out (literally and figuratively) in the mountains above Zermatt, Switzerland.

I've never skied in my life, and I probably never will, so I can't appreciate that from an insider's perspective:  but it's breathtaking to watch.  I'm not surprised to learn that it took almost three months to film it all.  I'm surprised Mr. Eder wasn't injured or killed in the process!

Like something out of a Bond movie.

I can think of far more comfortable ways to kill myself.

Nope, not on my best day.

I was stationed at MacDill AFB in Tampa FL back in the 80's when I got a temporary duty school to Ft Richardson AK to learn how to ski. A three week school to learn downhill and cross-country paid by Uncle Sam. After that the next time I went skiing was when I took my kids when they were 10 and 8 at least 15 years later. They didn't care for it. I haven't been since.

A lot work for legs and back to ski that grade, even without all the jumps. I grew up on skis, the steep slopes are a real workout. Once when I was older, I hadn’t skied for a year or two and went up with some friends. I realized I was in over my head and walked down before I broke something.

It's rather pretty, but I kind of wonder what it's all for in the end - what, really, has been achieved here? I thought the scenery was great; if I were skiing like that, that would be the best part, but I would feel guilty about leaving my tracks on that wonderfully smooth surface and cracking the odd icicle when going through that ice cave.
