A $4½ billion parking garage!

I was amused by this picture of the hangar deck of the USS Nimitz. Cars make a change from the warplanes that normally fill it!

It's an official US Navy photograph, published in a comment on the Jalopnik Web site. The caption reads:

101201-N-2811A-108
SAN DIEGO (Dec. 1, 2010) The privately owned vehicles (POV) of Sailors assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68) are parked aboard Nimitz in preparation for the ship’s homeport change from Naval Base Coronado to Naval Base Kitsap in Bremerton, Wash. Nimitz is loading more than 400 POVs for the transit to Washington as part of an Opportune Lift (OPLIFT) program to assist Sailors and their families with the move. Nimitz is scheduled to conduct a docking planned incremental availability (DPIA) upon arrival in Washington. (U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class Casey J. Amdahl/Released)

I also enjoyed some of the responses, which you'll find at the link. Considering that the Nimitz-class carriers each cost approximately $4½ billion, that's got to be the world's most expensive parking garage!

The USS Bon Homme Richard CVA-31 left the yards of Bremerton,Wash. with a load of private cars sailing to San Diego, Ca. in the spring of !961. The ship was being redeployed. Off the coast of Alameda I witnessed "Operation Plymouth" as an old beatup Plymouth was catapulted off the flight deck for the amusement of some politicians.

It makes for a bit of an odd picture, but it makes a lot of sense.
