A huge fire erupted in a warehouse in Chicago yesterday, resulting in the dispatch of a third of the city's fire engines and over 200 firefighters to contain and extinguish it. This all took place in freezing weather, of course. The result is that the warehouse - which was gutted by the fire - has been transformed into a surreal winter wonderland of icicles and ice stalactites.
Reader J. W. sent me these pictures of the warehouse after the fire had been extinguished. I don't know whether he took them himself, or passed them on from other sources. His e-mail didn't specify.
Strange to think that under such surreal white beauty, the objects are blackened and charred . . .
